Behrend Track & Field Teams Continue Successful Outdoor Seasons

On Saturday, April 5 the Penn State Behrend men's and women's track & field teams competed in the 2008 Washington and Jefferson Invitational. Both teams once again had very strong showings, as the men finished a stellar second out of a field of 14 teams and the women placed fifth out of 14 teams.

The men's team was led by Ronson Mazany (Ashville, NY/Panama Central) who finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 13.39m and second in the long jump with a leap of 6.78m. Denny Kang (South Park/South Park) placed second in the men’s pole vault as he cleared a height of 4.11m. Earl Bass (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) had a strong performance in the 110m hurdles placing second with a time of 15.80 seconds.

The Behrend Lions dominated the 100m dash with Mike Ferraro (
Erie/Harborcreek) finishing first with an impressive time of 11.13 seconds, followed closely by teammate Tyler Johnson (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie Central) who finished second with a time of 11.22 seconds.  Doug Stevenson (Sharpsville/Sharpsville) finished a respectable fourth with a time of 11.41 seconds in the same event.  In the 4x100 meter dash, Stevenson, Ferraro, Johnson and Phil Stuczynski (Girard/Girard) teamed up to finish with a time of 42.01 seconds which was good enough for second place. Rounding out the top finishers for the men was sophomore Jordin Telin (North Huntingdon/Norwin) who finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 50.98 seconds.

On the women’s side sophomore Virginia Rodgers-Owens  (Washington, DC/P.L. Dunbar) took home another impressive first place in the 100m dash with an outstanding time of 12.86 seconds in the finals. In distance running, Mallory Solueret (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) tied for second in the 5000 meter run with an impressive time of 19:18.72.

The men and women will be competing again this upcoming Saturday, April 12 as they head to Slippery Rock for an Invitational that will be starting at 10:00 a.m.
