Behrend Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader with
Allegheny

The Penn State Behrend baseball team
took on the Allegheny Gators on Tuesday, April 22 at the Behrend baseball
field. The teams split the doubleheader as Behrend (24-8) earned a
come-from-behind win by a 3-2 score in game one and Allegheny took game two
5-1.
In the bottom of the first Behrend got on the
scoreboard as Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/Sharpsville) singled and reached third on
an error before being driven home by Dustin Dubensky’s (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney)
single, giving Behrend a quick 1-0 lead.
Allegheny evened the game with a run in the top of the third and was
threatening to do more damage before a double-play ended the inning with the
score 1-1. The Gators struck again in the fourth inning, when a sacrifice
fly scored Mike Pereslucha to give Allegheny a 2-1 lead.
Paul Henry (Mamont/Kiski)
led off in the bottom of the seventh with a clutch double to get the rally started. Pinch-runner
Jarryd Pearson (Erie/Iroquois)
scored off Jon Gray’s (State College/State College) RBI single to tie the
game at 2-2. Dubensky was intentionally walked before pinch hitter David
Smith (Brockway/DuBois Central Catholic) walked to load the bases.
Geoff Lang
(Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) came up with one out and the bases juiced and smacked an infield hit that
drove in the game-winner as the Behrend Lions won 3-2.
In the second game Allegheny grabbed a quick 1-0 lead
after a couple walks and a single produced a run in the top of the first.
The Gators added another run in the second inning to go up 2-0 heading into
the third inning. Allegheny kept up the pressure in the third inning,
scoring two more runs before the blue was able to retire the side.
Behrend got a run back in the fourth when Ed Kessler
(Bethel Park/Bethel Park) singled in Lang to cut the lead to 4-1. In the
sixth, Allegheny added to its lead scoring one to take a 5-1 edge on the
scoreboard. The blue and white could not mount a rally and fell 5-1 in game
two.
The Behrend Lions
(24-8,13-1) have two conference doubleheaders remaining, leading up to the AMCC
Championship Tournament. First the squad will travel to Hilbert on Wednesday, April 23
for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. Then on Sunday, April 27 the men close
out the AMCC regular season at Medaille. AMCC Tournament play will
begin on Saturday, May 3.
