America Reads at Penn State Behrend

America Reads is a national campaign calling on all Americans - parents, educators, libraries, universities, religious institutions, the media, senior citizens, business leaders, and community and national groups - to help every child learn to read well and on their own.  The federal government has encouraged college work-study students to play a vital role in this initiative.

Any Penn State Behrend student who has been awarded Federal Work Study may get paid to work as an America Reads tutor.  The program is especially interested in individuals who are interested in community service and enthusiastic about helping young children learn the joys and rewards of reading.  Interested students must receive the following clearances before they can work:

Act 33 - Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (pdf)

Act 34 - Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Record Check (pdf)

Fingerprint Background Check

Penn State Behrend has three local America Reads tutoring sites:  Wesleyville, Diehl, and Klein Elementary Schools.  All tutors must provide their own transportation to and from the sites.  America Reads tutors are paid $10.00/hour from their Federal Work Study award for the 2007-08 school year. All tutors must have their paycheck directly deposited into a checking or savings account.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity or have additional questions, please contact Michelle Slagle at (814) 898-6166 in the Financial Aid Office at Penn State Behrend. There is a mandatory training session required. Fall 2007 training sessions will be held on:
