New Options Added to Biology Major

The major in Biology at Penn State Behrend has been revised in 2000 to reflect growth and new directions in the biology program, as well as to respond to the interests and goals of students planning to major in biology.

New options in Ecology, Genetics and Developmental Biology, and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry have been added for fall 2000. Newly created or revised courses that support the options include BIOBD 419, Population Ecology, BIOBD 401W, Biological Experimental Design, and MTHBD 446, Mathematical Modeling.  In all, the biology major now offers six options:

                    General Biology
                    Ecology
                    Genetics and Developmental Biology
                    Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
                    Medical Technology
                    Pre-Professional

By choosing an option within the Biology major, students have opportunities to pursue a general degree (General Biology), to focus on population and community biology (Ecology), or to focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms (Molecular Biology and Biochemistry). Medical Technology prepares students for careers in clinical laboratories. Pre-Professional allows exceptional students who gain early admission to a professional school to fulfill option requirements with academic credits taken during the first professional year.

The new curriculum is designed to prepare students for advanced work in graduate studies, careers in medicine or health care fields, or careers in industry and business.
