SAM AND IRENE BLACK SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Accounting Curriculum

Accounting majors are encouraged to meet with their assigned adviser during their first semester on campus to discuss interests and career goals and to begin planning a program of study that will help meet those goals. Discussions with an adviser afford an opportunity to explore career paths.

For the Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, a minimum of 120 credits is required. Students must earn a grade of C or better in each 300- and 400-level course in the major field. The major meets the requirements for taking the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) professional examinations.

Accounting also is available as a 20-credit minor to complement any of the four-year majors at the college. A grade of C or better is required for all courses in the Accounting minor.

A typical schedule for a first-semester Accounting student includes Rhetoric and Composition or Honors Freshman Composition; Techniques of Calculus or Calculus with Analytical Geometry I; one general education course each in the humanities, natural sciences, and arts; and a 1-credit First Year Seminar. Second semester courses generally include arts, humanities, and natural science general education requirements; and health or kinesiology.

Accounting coursework begins in the third semester. Because Accounting majors are expected to be familiar with general business functions, the required coursework includes classes in finance, management, management information systems, and marketing.
